Building the perfect six pack

Training abdominal muscles will not lead directly to a six pack but must be combined with regular endurance sport and a diet, according to Prof Ingo Froboese from the Centre for Health at the German Sports School in Cologne.

Froboese says fat covering the stomach muscles can only be burned through a combined exercise plan.

Sit-ups burn less than 0.5 grams of fat and can be disregarded as a method of losing weight.

In addition, almost no energy stored in the abdominal area is used while exercising the stomach muscles as they can supply their own energy requirements. That explains why sit-ups must be combined with weight training and endurance exercises.

Froboese says losing stomach fat is not only good for the physique but can also improve the body’s metabolism. – dpa
